-
If Fate should seal my Death to morrowB
Though much I hope she will postpone itC
I've held a share Joy and SorrowB
Enough for Ten and here I own itC
-
-
-
-
I've lived as many others liveD
And yet I think with more enjoymentE
For could I through my days again liveD
I'd pass them in the 'same' employmentE
-
-
-
-
That 'is' to say with 'some exception'F
For though I will not make confessionF
I've seen too much of man's deceptionF
Ever again to trust professionF
-
-
-
-
Some sage 'Mammas' with gesture haughtyG
Pronounce me quite a youthful SinnerH
But 'Daughters' say although he's naughtyG
You must not check a 'Young Beginner'H
-
-
-
-
I've loved and many damsels know itC
But whom I don't intend to mentionF
As 'certain stanzas' also show itC
'Some' say 'deserving Reprehension'F
-
-
-
-
Some ancient Dames of virtue fieryH
Unless Report does much belie themI
Have lately made a sharp EnquiryH
And much it 'grieves' me to 'deny' themI
-
-
-
-
Two whom I lov'd had 'eyes' of 'Blue'J
To which I hope you've no objectionF
The 'Rest' had eyes of 'darker Hue'K
Each Nymph of course was 'all perfection'F
-
-
-
-
But here I'll close my 'chaste' DescriptionF
Nor say the deeds of animosityH
For 'silence' is the best prescriptionF
To 'physic' idle curiosityH
-
-
-
-
Of 'Friends' I've known a 'goodly Hundred'H
For finding 'one' in each acquaintanceL
By 'some deceived' by others plunder'dH
'Friendship' to me was not 'Repentance'L
-
-
-
-
At 'School' I thought like other 'Children'F
Instead of 'Brains' a fine IngredientH
'Romance' my 'youthful Head bewildering'M
To 'Sense' had made me disobedientH
-
-
-
-
A victim 'nearly' from affectionF
To certain 'very precious scheming'M
The still remaining recollectionF
Has 'cured' my 'boyish soul' of 'Dreaming'M
-
-
-
-
By Heaven I rather would forswearH
The Earth and all the joys reserved meH
Than dare again the 'specious Snare'H
From which 'my Fate' and 'Heaven preserved' meH
-
-
-
-
Still I possess some Friends who love meH
In each a much esteemed and true oneF
The Wealth of Worlds shall never move meH
To quit their Friendship for a new oneF
-
-
-
-
But Becher you're a 'reverend pastor'H
Now take it in considerationF
Whether for penance I should fast orH
Pray for my 'sins' in expiationF
-
-
-
-
I own myself the child of 'Folly'J
But not so wicked as they make meH
I soon must die of melancholyH
If 'Female' smiles should e'er forsake meH
-
-
-
-
'Philosophers' have 'never doubted'H
That 'Ladies' Lips' were made for 'kisses '-
For 'Love ' I could not live without itH
For such a 'cursed' place as 'This is'L
-
-
-
-
Say Becher I shall be forgivenF
If you don't warrant my salvationF
I must resign all 'Hopes' of 'Heaven'F
For 'Faith' I can't withstand TemptationF
-
-
P S These were written between one and two after 'midnight' I have not 'corrected' or 'revised' Yours BYRONF
