Canto FirstA

The Gods of old are silent on the shoreB
Since the great Pan expired and through the roarB
Of the Ionian waters broke a dreadC
Voice which proclaimed the Mighty Pan is deadC
How much died with him false or true the dreamD
Was beautiful which peopled every streamD
With more than finny tenants and adornedE
The woods and waters with coy nymphs that scornedE
Pursuing Deities or in the embraceF
Of gods brought forth the high heroic raceF
Whose names are on the hills and o'er the seasG
