Exit God Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGFG HIHIJKJK LMLM

Of old our father's God was realA
Something they almost sawB
Which kept them to a stern idealA
And scourged them into aweC
-
They walked the narrow path of rightD
Most vigilantly wellE
Because they feared eternal nightD
And boiling depths of HellE
-
Now Hell has wholly boiled awayF
And God become a shadeG
There is no place for him to stayF
In all the world He madeG
-
The followers of William JamesH
Still let the Lord existI
And call Him by imposing namesH
A venerable listI
But nerve and muscle only countJ
Gray matter of the brainK
And an astonishing amountJ
Of inconvenient painK
-
I sometimes wish that God were backL
In this dark world and wideM
For though sonic virtues He might lackL
He had his pleasant sideM
