You are trapped in a life of sufferingA
Suffering so dark it quiets your voiceB
And quenches all initiativeC
A soul lost at seaD

I stand by the shore watchingA
I have no way of reaching youE
No way of preventing youE
From drowningA
-
I yell desperately in the darknessF
Don t stop swimming I m hereG
You cannot hear meD
The storm is ragingA
-
Eventually I see the futility of the situationH
I leave my heart by the shorelineI
Turn my backJ
and leaveK

Poet's note: After a long battle trying to help a friend out of an abusive relationship, completely exhausting myself trying to empathize, help and provide guidance on a daily basis, I had to give up before I myself got lost in the situation. This poems represents the frustration, bitterness and sorrow of seeing a loved one being stuck in a critical situation unable to help - leaving my heart there for them to find, if they ever make it to shore.
