Desperation

You are trapped in a life of suffering
Suffering so dark it quiets your voice
And quenches all initiative
A soul lost at sea

I stand by the shore, watching
I have no way of reaching you
No way of preventing you
From drowning

I yell desperately in the darkness;
Don’t stop swimming - I’m here!
You cannot hear me,
The storm is raging

Eventually I see the futility of the situation
I leave my heart by the shoreline
Turn my back,
and leave

Poet's note: After a long battle trying to help a friend out of an abusive relationship, completely exhausting myself trying to empathize, help and provide guidance on a daily basis, I had to give up before I myself got lost in the situation. This poems represents the frustration, bitterness and sorrow of seeing a loved one being stuck in a critical situation unable to help - leaving my heart there for them to find, if they ever make it to shore.
