The River Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCBDDEEFF AGHGIIJJKKLL AMNMAOCO

WHY hurry little riverA
Why hurry to the seaB
There is nothing there to doC
But to sink into the blueC
And all forgotten beB
There is nothing on that shoreD
But the tides for evermoreD
And the faint and far off lineE
Where the winds across the brineE
For ever ever roamF
And never find a homeF
-
Why hurry little riverA
From the mountains and the meadG
Where the graceful elms are sleepingH
And the quiet cattle feedG
The loving shadows coolI
The deep and restful poolI
And every tribute streamJ
Brings its own sweet woodland dreamJ
Of the mighty woods that sleepK
Where the sighs of earth are deepK
And the silent skies look downL
On the savage mountain's frownL
-
Oh linger little riverA
Your banks are all so fairM
Each morning is a hymn of praiseN
Each evening is a prayerM
All day the sunbeams glitterA
On your shallows and your barsO
And at night the dear God stills youC
With the music of the starsO

Connie McQuade: We had to memorize this poem in elementary school. Sixty years later, I have never forgotten it.
