THEY were islanders our fathers wereA
And they watched the encircling seasB
And their hearts drank in the ceaseless stirA
And the freedom of the breezeB
Till they chafed at their narrow boundsC
-
And longed for the sweep of the mainD
And they fretted and fumed like houndsC
Held in within sight of the plainD
And the playE
And the preyE
-
-
So they built them ships of wood and sailedF
To many an unknown coastG
They braved the storm and battles hailedF
And danger they loved mostG
Till the tiny ships of woodH
-
Grew powerful on the globeI
And the new found lands for goodH
They wrapped in a wondrous robeI
Of bold designJ
Our brave ensignK
-
-
And islanders yet in a way are weL
Our knowledge is still confinedM
And we hear the roar of encircling seaL
To be crossed in the ship of the mindM
And we dream of lands afarN
-
Unknown unconquered yetO
And we chafe at the bounds there areN
And our spirits fume and fretO
For the prizeP
Of the wiseP
-
-
But we'll never do aught I know unlessQ
We are brave as our sires of oldR
And face like them the bitternessS
Of the battle and storm and coldR
Unless we boldly standT
-
When men would hold us backU
With the helm board in our handT
And our eyes to the shining trackU
Of what may beL
Beyond the seaL
-
-
There are rocks out there in that wide wide seaL
'Neath many a darkling streamV
And souls that once sailed out bold and freeL
Have been carried away in a dreamV
For they never came back againW
-
On the deep the ships were lostX
But in spite of the danger and painD
The ocean has still to be crossedX
And only they doY
Who are brave and trueY
