- | |
- | |
- | |
O POOR sad hearts that struggle on and wait | B |
Like shipwrecked sailors on a spar at sea | C |
Through deepening glooms if haply soon or late | B |
Some day dawn glimmer of what is to be | C |
Not knowing Christ nor gladdened by His Love | D |
- | |
And Life indwelling to you I dedicate | B |
These humble musings praying that from above | D |
On you being faithful found the light may shine | E |
Of Life incarnate and of Love divine | E |
Take then these thoughts in loving memory | C |
- | |
Of those dead hearts that brought it first to me | C |
- | |
- | |
DOWN by the sea in infinite solitude | F |
And wrapt in darkness save when gleams of light | G |
Broke from the moon aslant the hurrying clouds | H |
That fled the wind lay Justin worn with grief | I |
And heart sick with vain searching after God | J |
- | |
- | |
He heeded not the cold white foam that crept | K |
In silence round his feet nor the tall sedge | L |
That sighed like lonely forest round his head | M |
His heart was weary of this weight of being | N |
Weary of all the mystery of life | O |
- | |
Weary of all the littleness of men | P |
And the dark riddle that he could not solve | Q |
Why men should be why pain and sin and death | R |
And where were hid the lineaments of God | J |
No voice was near Behind a lofty cape | S |
- | |
Whose iron face was scarred by many a storm | T |
Loomed threatening in the dark and cleft the main | U |
And laid its giant hand upon the deep | V |
One grizzled oak tree crowned it and the surf | W |
Broke ever at its base with ceaseless voice | X |
- | |
Powerless to mar its silent majesty | C |
Sweet was the loneliness to Justin sweet | Y |
Perturb d nature as in harmony | C |
With the dark thoughts that beat upon his soul | Z |
Nor speechless long he lay The tide of grief | I |
- | |
O'erflowing the narrow limits of the mind | A2 |
Broke from him and in burning word he cried | B2 |
O God if God there be in this foul chase | C2 |
O Fate if Fate it be that drives us thus | D2 |
O Chance if it be Thou that mouldeth all | E2 |
- | |
Stern Power whate'er Thy name that sit'st sublime | F2 |
Above creation throned creation's Lord | G2 |
With feet upon the spheres whose flaming arms | H2 |
Scatter new worlds form age to age to roll | Z |
Thro' the dim cycles of all time to bloom | I2 |
- | |
Into warm life what iron law impels | H2 |
Or wanton cruelty in the eternal deep | V |
Of mind supreme Thee to send sin and death | R |
To prey thus on the creatures of Thine hands | H2 |
Until the while skulls crumble back to earth | J2 |
- | |
From whence they sprung O Chance O Fate O God | J |
My soul is broken with the clang of worlds | H2 |
The universe is discord all to me | C |
I see dark planets roll o'er human graves | H2 |
I feel them quivering with the cries of souls | H2 |
- | |
I know no more O Power whose face is veiled | K2 |
From man in Thine own greatness Thou whom I | L2 |
Thro' weary years have sought but sought in vain | U |
In every shadow upon every hill | M2 |
In the sweet features of a child or on | N2 |
- | |
The illimitable sea in heat in cold | O2 |
And in the rain that clothes the earth with buds | H2 |
And in the breath of things invisible | P2 |
Till worn and helpless now I long for death | R |
Let me before I die hear some still voice | H2 |
- | |
If such indeed there be some undertone | Q2 |
That flowing from eternity thro' all | E2 |
The jarring voices that now rend the soul | Z |
Shall blend them into one long harmony | C |
So let me hearing die and dying rest | R2 |
- | |
- | |
He ceased and sweet as after day of storm | T |
Flows the still sea at even the winds and waves | H2 |
Asleep in purple mists a silence crept | K |
Over the worlds and flooded Justin's soul | Z |
And in the silence Justin heard a voice | H2 |
- | |
And the warm throbbing of a human heart | S2 |
And thro' the darkness moved the form of Christ | T2 |
White robed with crown of thorns and those sad eyes | H2 |
That saw His Mother weep beside the cross | H2 |
Then form innumerable throats uprose | H2 |
- | |
One glorious music one great hymn of praise | H2 |
From all creation th' universal sounds | H2 |
Of tireless nature thunders of the sea | H2 |
On clouded crags where arctic winds at night | G |
Tear at its foaming lips a land of ice | H2 |
- | |
And spectral suns the deep toned mountains too | U2 |
All shadow clad in forests send their voice | H2 |
From caverns subterranean where the newts | H2 |
And blind worms fear no day the lion's roar | V2 |
On viewless waste the thundering cataract | W2 |
- | |
And huge leviathan Nor only these | H2 |
But from the laughing groves and vine clad hills | H2 |
And valleys come sweet sounds the notes of birds | H2 |
The hum of insects when the meridian sun | A |
Drives the glad reapers to their noonday meal | X2 |
- | |
By leaf arched brook and lowings from the fold | O2 |
In cooler evening when the maidens ply | L2 |
Their daily task the children's innocent mirth | J2 |
And angels' songs cloud wafted from the deep | V |
Of heaven's blue and fainter still the sounds | H2 |
- | |
Of far off worlds and the orbed universe | H2 |
But that which ran thro' all and linked them all | E2 |
In one long harmony that undertone | Q2 |
Which made them music was the voice of Christ | T2 |
And the soft beating of His human heart | S2 |
- | |
A calm light stole on Justin and a peace | H2 |
Unknown before unutterable deep | V |
Within the spirit's depths a new born sense | H2 |
As if his heart had eyes and every eye | L2 |
Saw God thro' all in His own loveliness | H2 |
- | |
The vision passed and slowly Justin rose | H2 |
Unwilling quickly to disturb the peace | H2 |
Which his strange dream had poured into his soul | Z |
And the last accents of the voice that yet | Y2 |
Throbbed in his heart and kindled all his love | D |
- | |
There was a stillness and a hush o'er nature | Z2 |
The sweet expectancy of early dawn | A3 |
That waits its king the wind had fall'n the sea | H2 |
And shore spoke but in whispers only birds | H2 |
Felt not the universal awe but from their nests | H2 |
- | |
Dew sprinkled woke with songs the sleeping woods | H2 |
Through which a faded beauty peered the moon | B3 |
Then turning Justin suddenly beheld | Y2 |
A man of years with long dark robes and hair | C3 |
Whiter than sea foam in the moonlight seen | D3 |
- | |
Strewn on black rocks who seeing Justin rise | H2 |
Moved nearer to him saying O my son | A |
For son thou art in this new faith whereto | Y2 |
I call thee seeing thou wilt be born again | P |
By water and the washing of thy soul | Z |
- | |
Form its vain creeds me hath the Father sent | Y2 |
In His great mercy loving thee and all | E2 |
To be a witness to thee of thy dream | E3 |
To solve the mysteries thou couldst not solve | Q |
By thine own searching and to lead thee now | F3 |
- | |
To that dear Voice thou heard'st and lay thine head | Y2 |
Upon the Heart that filled thy soul with peace | H2 |
So by the sea among the frowning rocks | H2 |
They sat in converse while the aged priest | Y2 |
Led Justin's spirit onward thro' the gloom | I2 |
- | |
Of vain philosophies as one who guides | H2 |
An alpine traveller up some dizzy height | Y2 |
Where opening views expand at every step | G3 |
Thro' lessening mist till Justin gazed at last | Y2 |
Upon a manger rude and sleeping lain therein | H3 |
- | |
He saw the features of the Son of God | Y2 |
My Father then cried Justin now my heart | Y2 |
Reads the bright message of my dream I see | H2 |
How vain and futile all philosophies | H2 |
But this the last which burns into my soul | Z |
- | |
With fire of love so wondrous yet I see | H2 |
How even they with weak and tremulous hand | Y2 |
Point toward the Christ and lead men up to Him | I3 |
I now descry His footsteps in dead years | H2 |
He guiding me unconscious knowing Him not | Y2 |
- | |
When first my limbs full grown in sinewy youth | J3 |
Felt the strong life within my spirit glad | Y2 |
Moved like broad day enshrined in cloudless skies | H2 |
No care I knew no sorrow grieved my heart | Y2 |
But all was joy a throbbing flowing joy | K3 |
- | |
I wandered thro' the forests and the wilds | H2 |
On mountain height above the birth of storms | H2 |
I heard unmoved the thunder at my feet | Y2 |
And tottering crags that filled abysmal depths | H2 |
With shattered pinnacles and voices dread | Y2 |
- | |
That made earth tremble to its central fire | Z2 |
I heard the lion's roar but felt no fear | L3 |
The many fingered forests clapped their hands | H2 |
They breathed my life the lions were free as I | L2 |
I felt all nature and myself were one | A |
- | |
Birds beasts and insects breathing flowers and trees | H2 |
And charm d life linked us in brotherhood | Y2 |
I watched the rising sun from day to day | Y2 |
Surprise the world with glories ever new | U2 |
No clouds obscured the rosy hands of dawn | A3 |
- | |
But lifted us to realms of joyousness | H2 |
And deepening light No thought of settin | A3 |
