AS some great cloud upon a mountain's breastA
Hanging for ever shutteth out the sunB
Its chilly fingers twining in the treesC
And blighting them so ever one dark thoughtD
Broods o'er my life and makes my spirit droopE
-
Beneath its baleful shade A demon formF
Is ever at my side whose icy touchG
Freezes my warmest thoughts and makes them hangH
Like dull cold icicles about my heartI
I feel his presence 'mid my fellow menJ
-
I see his image in the restless seaK
That gnaws the land and on the towering topL
Where everything is still amid the rocksM
Worn bald by fleeting years I hear his treadN
I see his footsteps in the lonely wildO
-
Where forests ever spring and ever dieP
But most of all I feel him near the nightQ
When all the world is shrouded in the gloomR
Of dreamful Sleep so like his brother DeathS
I see his eyeballs on the glittering skyP
-
I hear his laughter ringing from the starsT
That look at me and say O helpless wormU
Upon the world of worms dost thou not knowV
The dust thou treadest in was once like theeK
And laughed its laugh and had its time to weepW
-
And now lies helpless trampled on forgotX
Scattered upon thy tiny globe which hangsY
Chained to its sun in black infinityK
That thou thou too must soon be dust againJ
Forgotten helpless trampled on by thoseZ
-
That shall come after theeK
I even hearA2
His voice amid the voices of my friendsB2
Harsh taunting me with death and dreams of deathS
And when I gaze in rapture on the faceC2
-
Of whom I love he casts a hideous lightQ
That lets me see behind the sweet warm fleshD2
The lightless skull and o'er the rounded formF
The shades of death aye dark and darker growingE2
Until the life light melts into the nightQ
-
Oh would that I could break the curs d chainF2
That binds this monster to me for my lifeG2
Is like some gloomy valley that lies chillH2
Beneath a frowning precipice And yetI2
The thread of gloom is woven in my beingE2
-
And I am loth to rend it for my thoughtsJ2
Have long been shaded by it Ever sinceK2
I first could play I used to watch the boysL2
So joyous in their sports and saw them menJ
Grown chilly hearted in a chilly worldM2
-
Grown weary with the burden of their lifeG2
All restless seeking rest yet finding changeN2
And then I saw the gathering shadows lowerO2
Upon the evening of their life and thenJ
They merged into the dark and all was stillH2
-
Dust under dust forgotten by the worldM2
In ugly loathsomenessL2
The demon stillH2
Was at my side in after years and threwP2
A shade on every friendship as a cloudQ2
-
Floats past the sun and dims the flowering fieldsL2
Oft have I wondered at the woodland streamR2
That dances on through dappled lighted woodsL2
O'er mossy pebbles glinting in the sunB
Like eyes of merry children round the fireO2
-
And never seems to think that it must threadN
The misty fen where every flower grows rankS2
Amid the lazy ooze and sink at lastT2
Beneath the boundless sea Oh happy theyU2
Who thus go laughing on from year to yearV2
-
And never know the mystery of beingE2
And never start and shudder at the dreamR2
That they and all mankind are dreaming LifeG2
And strive to wake but fall back helplesslyK
Who fancy sunlight when the sky is darkW2
-
And never know that time like India's snakeX2
Enwraps us with his gaudy coloured foldsL2
Of changing seasons till his dread embraceL2
Has crushed out life who live and laugh and weepW
And tread the dust of myriads underfootY2
-
And see men die around them yet whose lifeG2
The demon form that stalks beside my pathZ2
The consciousness of never ending changeN2
Has never darkened as it darkens mineA3
Beneath the shadow of the wings of DeathS
