I niver thowt when I grew owdA
I'd tak to leetin' lampsB
I sud have said I'd rayther padA
My hoof on t' road wi' trampsC
But sin I gate that skelp i' t' mineD
I'm wankle i' my heeadA
So gaffer said I'd give ower warkE
An' leet town lamps atsteeadA
-
At first when I were liggin' snugF
I' bed warm as a beeG
'T were hard to rise and get agateA
As sooin as t' clock strake threeG
An' I were flaid to hear my stepsH
Echoin' on ivery wallI
An' flaider yet when down by t' churchJ
Ullets would skreek and callI
-
But now I'm flaid o' nowt I loveK
All unkerd sounds o' t' neetA
Frae childer talkin' i' their dreamsL
To t' tramp o' p'licemen' feetA
But most of all I love to harkM
To t' song o' t' birds at dawnN
They wakken up afore it gloamsL
When t' dew ligs thick on t' lawnN
-
If I feel lonesome up I lookO
To t' sky aboon my heeadA
An' theer's yon stars all glestrin' breetA
Like daisies in a meadA
But sometimes when I'm glowerin' upP
I see the Lord hissenN
He's doutin' all yon lamps o' HeavenN
That shines on mortal menN
-
He lowps alang frae star to starQ
As cobby as can beG
Mebbe He reckons fowk's asleepR
Wi' niver an eye to seeG
But I hae catched Him at his warkE
For all He maks no dinN
He leaves a track o' powder'd gowdA
To show where He has binN
-
He's got big lamps an' laatle lampsL
An' lamps that twinkles redA
Im capped to see Him dout 'em allI
Afore I'm back i' bedA
But He don't laik about His warkE
Or stop to hark to t' birdsL
He minds His business does the LordA
An' wastes no gaumless wordsL
-
I grow more like Him ivery dayA
For all I walk so lameS
An' happen there will coom a timeT
I'll beat Him at His gameS
Thrang as Throp's wife I'll dout my lampsL
Afore He's gotten so farQ
An' then I'll shout I've won my raceL
I've bet Him by a starQ
