The Lord's bin hard on me SirA
He's stown my barn awayB
O dowly dowly was that neetC
He stole lile Doad awayB
-
'Twas Whissuntide we weddedD
Next Easter he was bornE
Just as t' last star i' t' April skyF
Had faded into t' mornE
Throstles were singin cantyG
For they'd their young i' t' nestH
But birds don't know a mother's loveI
That howds her barn to t' breastH
-
When wark was ower i' summerA
I nussed him on my kneesJ
An' Mike browt home at lowsin' timeK
Wild rasps an' strawberriesJ
We used to sit on t' door sillL
I' t' leet o' t' harvist moonM
While our lile Doad would clench his fistsN
An' suck his toes an' croonM
-
But when t' mell sheaf was gottenO
An' back end days set inP
Wi' frost at neet an' roke by dayB
His face gate pinched an' thinP
We niver knew what ailed himQ
He faded like a floorR
He faded same as skies'll fadeS
When t' sun dips into t' moorT
-
Church bells on Kersmas mornin'P
Rang out so merrilyG
But cowd an' dreesome were our heartsU
We knew lile Doad must deeG
He lay so still in his creddleG
An' slowly he dwined awayB
While I laid two pennies on his eenP
On Holy Innocents' DayB
-
The Lord's bin hard on me SirA
He's stown my barn awayB
O dowly dowly was that neetC
He stole lile Doad awayB
