Maria Immisch was the springtimeA
With feeling and reverenceB
I snatch her adored name from the underworldC
When I was fifteen in ' that yearD
they celebrated the big Schiller centennialE
and I saw her as heroine in his famous playsF
To this day my heart's still thankfulE
-
The city park was already dense in leafG
The lilacs beckoned I was allowedH
Entry into the Classical TheaterI
I sat in the overpacked balconyJ
She stood inflamed with her stage magic presenceB
While a storm of emotions raged through my fresh heartK
As did the song of Schiller's iambsB
-
Her hair was black Her eyes were blueL
She played girl child and ladyJ
In peplum petticoat Stuart collar cloakM
She spoke the words in a dark contraltoJ
She strode and suffered and died her character on airN
She was that woman She was my dear and holy faithO
The one who pierced the invulnerable meJ
-
The spring named Maria ImmischP
Showed me the way to this far shoreQ
She was the springtime But I was in bloomR
I became dead quiet Life was too bigS
My hopeless case was at schoolT
For I studied her picture all the live long dayJ
Painfully healthy so blissfully sickU
-
That night I fled from the houseB
And stood with that cuffed bouquetJ
Lacking the audacity outside the stage doorQ
She came out with a gentleman trimmed in furI
She was the star of the city she was a starV
In utter silence I retreated with my flowers from that placeB
Almost relieved that I had failedJ
-
The night was moon white in the parkW
I tossed those flowers in the pondJ
There they floated I didn't mean it to be symbolicU
My heart wasn't hurt wasn't greedy for painX
For the first time I had an inkling of warm tearsB
That we only get what we never getJ
Maria Immisch the spring ' be thankedJ
