Rhyme Scheme: A BCDCEFBFGHBHIJBJ KLMLNOBOPJQJRGJG BSTSBULUBKTKBLBL| June th | A |
| - | |
| Notably fond of music I dote on a | B |
| clearer tone | C |
| Than ever was blared by a bugle or zoomed | D |
| by a saxophone | C |
| And the sound that opens the gates for me of | E |
| a Paradise revealed | F |
| Is something akin to the note revered by the | B |
| bless d Eugene Field | F |
| Who sang in pellucid phrasing that I perfectly | G |
| will recall | H |
| Of the clink of the ice in the pitcher that the | B |
| boy brings up the hall | H |
| But sweeter to me than the sparrow's song or | I |
| the goose's autumn honks | J |
| Is the sound of the ice in the shaker as the | B |
| barkeeper mixes a Bronx | J |
| - | |
| Between the dark and the daylight when I'm | K |
| worried about The Tower | L |
| Comes a pause in the day's tribulations that | M |
| is known as the cocktail hour | L |
| And my soul is sad and jaded and my heart | N |
| is a thing forlorn | O |
| And I view the things I have written with a | B |
| sickening scathing scorn | O |
| Oh it's then I fare with some other slave who | P |
| is hired for the things he writes | J |
| To a Den of Sin where they mingle gin such | Q |
| as Lipton's Mouquin's or Whyte's | J |
| And my spirit thrills to a music sweeter than | R |
| Sullivan or Puccini | G |
| The swash of the ice in the shaker as he mixes | J |
| a Dry martini | G |
| - | |
| The drys will assert that metallic sound is the | B |
| selfsame canon made | S |
| By the ice in a shaker that holds a drink | T |
| like orange or lemonade | S |
| But on the word of a traveled man and a | B |
| bard who has been around | U |
| The sound of tin on ice and gin is a snappier | L |
| happier sound | U |
| And I mean to hymn as soon as I have a | B |
| moment of leisure time | K |
| The chill susurrus of cocktail ice in an adequae | T |
| piece of rhyme | K |
| But I've just had an invitation to hark at a | B |
| beckoning bar | L |
| To the sound of the ice in the shaker as the | B |
| barkeeper mixes a Star | L |
