William it was I think three years agoA
As I recall one cool October morningB
You have The Tribune files I think they'll showA
I gave you warningB
-
I said in well selected words and terseC
In phrases balanced yet replete with powerD
That I should cease to pen the prose and verseC
Known as The TowerD
That I should stop this Labyrinth of LightE
Though stopping make the planet leaden heartedF
Unless you stop the well known SchrecklichkeitF
Your nation startedF
-
I printed it in type that you could readF
My paragraphs were thewed my rhymes were sinewedF
You paid I judge from what ensued no heedF
The war continuedF
-
And though my lines with fortitude were fraughtF
Although my words were strong and stripped of stuffingB
You William thought oh yes you did you thoughtF
That I was bluffingB
-
You thought that I would fail to see it throughG
You thought that at the crux of things I'd cowerD
How little how imperfectly you knewG
The Conning TowerD
-
You'll miss the column at the break of dayF
I have no fear that I shall be forgottenH
You'll miss the daily privilege to sayF
That stuff is rottenH
-
Or else as sometimes has occured when II
Have chanced upon a lucky line to blunderD
You'll miss the precious privilege to cryI
That bird's a wonderD
-
Well William when your people cease to strafeJ
When you have put an end to all this war stuffK
When all the world is reasonably safeJ
I'll write some more stuffK
-
And when you miss the quip and wanton wileL
And learn you can't endure the Towerless seasonH
O William I shall not be petty I'llL
Listen to reasonH
