Recuerdo Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC AADDEE AAFFGGA HHIIJJ HHKKLL HHMMDD

We were very tired we were very merryA
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferryA
It was bare and bright and smelled like a stableB
But we looked into a fire we leaned across a tableB
We lay on a hilltop underneath the moonC
And the whistles kept blowing and the dawn came soonC
-
We were very tired we were very merryA
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferryA
And you ate an apple and I ate a pearD
From a dozen of each we had bought somewhereD
And the sky went wan and the wind came coldE
And the sun rose dripping a bucketful of goldE
-
We were very tired we were very merryA
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferryA
We hailed Good morrow mother to a shawl covered headF
And bought a morning paper which neither of us readF
And she wept God bless you for the apples and pearsG
And we gave her all our money but our subway faresG
EDNA ST VINCENT MILLAY in PoetryA
-
I was very sad I was very solemnH
I had worked all day grinding out a columnH
I came back from dinner at half past sevenI
And I couldn't think of anything till quarter to elevenI
And then I red Recuerdo by Miss MillayJ
And I said I'll bet a nickel I can write that wayJ
-
I was very sad I was very solemnH
I had worked all day whittling out a columnH
I said I'll bet a nickel I can chirp such a chantK
And Mr Geoffrey Parsons said I'll bet you can'tK
I bit a chunk of chocolate and found it sweetL
And I listened to the trucking on Frankfort StreetL
-
I was very sad I was very solemnH
I had worked all day fooling with a columnH
I got as far as this and took my verses inM
To Mr Geoffrey Parsons who said Kid you winM
And not not that I imagine that anyone'll careD
I blew that jitney on a subway fareD
