'Twas on the shores that round our coastA
From Deal to Newport lieB
That I roused from sleep in a huddled heapC
An elderly wealthy guyB
-
His hair was graying his hair was longD
And graying and long was heE
And I heard this grouch on the shore avouchF
In a singular jazzless keyE
-
Oh I am a cook and a waitress trimG
And a maid of the second floorH
And a strong chauffeur and a housekeeperI
And the man who tends the doorH
-
And he shook his fists and he tore his hairJ
And he started to frisk and playK
Till I couldn't help thinking the man had been drinkingL
So I said in the Gilbert wayK
-
Oh elderly man I don't know muchF
Of the ways of societeeA
But I'll eat my friend if I comprehendA
However you can beE
-
At once a cook and a waitress trimG
And the maid of the second floorH
And a strong chauffeur and a housekeeperI
And the man who tends the doorH
-
Then he smooths his hair with a nervous airJ
And a gulp in his throat he swallowsM
And that elderly guy he then lets flyB
Substantially as followsM
-
We had a house down Newport wayK
And we led a simple lifeN
There was only I said the elderly guyB
And my daughter and my wifeN
-
And of course the cook and a waitress trimG
And the maid of the second floorH
And a strong chauffeur and a housekeeperI
And the man who tends the doorH
-
One day the cook she up and leftA
She up and left us flatA
She was getting a hundred and ten a monO
Th but she couldn't work for thatA
-
And the waitress trim was her bosom friendA
And she wouldn't stay no moreH
And our strong chauffeur eloped with herI
Who was the maid of the second floorH
-
And we couldn't get no other helpP
So I had to cook and waitA
It was quite absurd wept the elderly birdA
I deserve a better fateA
-
And I drove the car and I made the bedsQ
Till the housekeeper up and quitA
And the man at the door found that a boreH
Which is why I am to witA
-
At once a cook and a waitress trimG
And the maid of the second floorH
And a strong chauffeur and a housekeeperI
And the man who tends the doorH
