I remember I rememberA
The house where I was bornB
The rent was thirty two a monthC
Which made my father mournB
He said he could remember whenD
His father paid the rentE
And when a man's expenses didF
Not take his every centE
-
I remember I rememberA
My mother telling my cousinG
That eggs had gone to twenty sixH
Or seven cents a dozenG
And how she told my father thatI
She didn't like to speakJ
Of things like that but Bridget nowK
Demanded four a weekJ
-
I remember I rememberA
And with a mirthless laughL
My weekly board at college tookM
A jump to three and a halfL
-
I bought an eighteen dollar suitN
And father told me SonnyO
I'll pay the bill this time but OhP
I am not made out of moneyO
-
I remember I rememberA
When I was young and braveQ
And I declared Well Birdie weO
Shall now begin to saveQ
It was a childish ignoranceR
But now 'tis little joyS
To know I'm farther off from wealthT
Than when I was a boyS
