Ballade Of The Hardy Annual Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCBC A ABBCBC ABABBABA D BABA

Many a jest that refuses to dieA
Bobs up again as the seasons appearB
Deathless it hits us again in the eyeA
Changeless and dull as the calendar yearB
Musty and mouldy and yellow and sereB
Stronger withal than the sturdiest oakC
Ancient and solemn and deadly and drearB
Down with the grandmother funeral jokeC
-
Soon as the snow has forgotten to flyA
All through the day of the 'leathery sphere '-
Jokelets and pictures and verses we spyA
All on the theme of the grandmother dearB
Bonnets umbrellas and buckets of beerB
Please us and tickle us quite to the chokeC
But on this matter our attitude's clearB
Down with the grandmother funeral jokeC
-
Giggle we can at a blueberry pieA
Scream at a comedy king or ameerB
Simply guffaw when the jestermen guyA
Marriage a thing at which no one should jeerB
Things that in others elicit a tearB
All of our risibles simply unyokeA
But from this stand we're unwilling to veerB
Down with the grandmother funeral jokeA
-
-
L'ENVOID
-
Brothers in motley the season is hereB
Small is the boon that we sadly invokeA
Butcher it murder it jump on its earB
Down with the grandmother funeral jokeA
