The Text of this ballad was taken down before the end of the nineteenth century by the Rev S Baring Gould from a blacksmith at Thrushleton DevonA
-
The Story is a simple little tale which recalls Barbara Allen Clerk Sanders Lord Thomas and Fair Annet and others I have placed it here for contrast and in illustration of the disdain of 'brown' maidsB
-
-
THE BROWN GIRLC
-
-
'I am as brown as brown can beD
And my eyes as black as sloeE
I am as brisk as brisk can beD
And wild as forest doeE
-
-
'My love he was so high and proudF
His fortune too so highG
He for another fair pretty maidH
Me left and passed me byG
-
-
'Me did he send a love letterI
He sent it from the townJ
Saying no more he loved meD
For that I was so brownJ
-
-
'I sent his letter back againK
Saying his love I valued notL
Whether that he would fancy meD
Whether that he would notL
-
-
'When that six months were overpass'dL
Were overpass'd and goneM
Then did my lover once so boldL
Lie on his bed and groanN
-
-
'When that six months were overpass'dL
Were gone and overpass'dL
O then my lover once so boldL
With love was sick at lastL
-
-
'First sent he for the doctor manO
You doctor me must cureP
The pains that now do torture meD
I can not long endureP
-
-
'Next did he send from out the townJ
O next did send for meD
He sent for me the brown brown girlC
Who once his wife should beD
-
-
'O ne'er a bit the doctor manO
His sufferings could relieveQ
O never an one but the brown brown girlC
Who could his life reprieve '-
-
-
Now you shall hear what love she hadL
For this poor love sick manO
How all one day a summer's dayL
She walked and never ranO
-
-
When that she came to his bedsideL
Where he lay sick and weakR
O then for laughing she could not standL
Upright upon her feetL
-
-
'You flouted me you scouted meD
And many another oneA
Now the reward is come at lastL
For all that you have done '-
-
-
The rings she took from off her handsS
The rings by two and threeD
'O take O take these golden ringsT
By them remember me '-
-
-
She had a white wand in her handL
She strake him on the breastL
'My faith and troth I give back to theeD
So may thy soul have rest '-
-
-
'Prithee ' said he 'forget forgetL
Prithee forget forgiveU
O grant me yet a little spaceV
That I may be well and live '-
-
-
'O never will I forget forgiveU
So long as I have breathW
I'll dance above your green green graveX
Where you do lie beneath '-
