The dews were on the hedgesA
The mist was on the meadB
When down among the sedgesA
I wrought my pipe of reedB
I blew my pipe with powerC
Men only cursed the soundD
That woke them when the hourC
Brought back their labor s roundD
-
The scythe was in the barleyE
The sickle in the wheatF
The pipe I made so earlyE
Had lost its tones so sweetF
And weary man and maidenG
Upon the glowing soilH
My reed pipe fell upbraidingI
That lightened not their toilH
-
The men had left their mowingI
The maids to bind the sheavesA
I took me for my blowingI
A wheatstraw stripped of leavesA
And cares all ceased to cumberC
No voice was now upraisedF
I piped them all to slumberC
And in their dreams was praisedF
