Excelsior Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIJ

If one should strive to reach a starA
He would not build a ladder highB
Seek foot by foot to climb so farA
And step by step ascend the skyB
-
But he would seek the wild bird s wingsC
The secret of the lightning s playD
Leap out upon the night s blue ringsC
And hail at dawn his wished for dayD
-
I will not vainly seek to theeE
By ladder steps of wealth or fameF
Till some few feet below me beE
The world thy distance still the sameF
-
But I will seek that influenceG
By which all nature s marvels moveH
Till I by flash or flight from henceI
Win to thee as on wings of LoveJ
