Why dost thou shade thy lovely face Oh whyA
Does that eclipsing hand so long denyA
The sunshine of thy soul enliv'ning eyeA
-
Without that light what light remains in meB
Thou art my life my way my light in theeB
I live I move and by thy beams I seeB
-
Thou art mv life if thou but turn awayC
My life's a thousand deaths thou art my wayC
Without thee Lord I travel not but strayC
-
My light thou art without thy glorious sightD
Mine eyes are darken'd with perpetual nightD
My God thou art my way my life my lightD
-
Thou art my way I wander if thou flyA
Thou art my light if hid how blind am IA
Thou art my life if thou withdraw I dieA
-
Mine eyes are blind and dark I cannot seeB
To whom or whither should my darkness fleeB
But to the light and who's that light but theeB
-
My path is lost my wand'ring steps do strayC
I cannot safely go nor safely stayC
Whom should I seek but thee my path my wayC
-
Oh I am dead to whom shall I poor IA
Repair to whom shall my sad ashes flyA
But life and where is life but in thine eyeA
-
And yet thou turn'st away thy face and fly'st meB
And yet I sue for grace and thou deny'st meB
Speak art thou angry Lord or only try'st meB
-
Unscreen those heavenly lamps or tell me whyA
Thou shad'st thy face perhaps thou think'st no eyeA
Can view those flames and not drop down and dieA
-
If that be all shine forth and draw thee nigherC
Let me behold and die for my desireC
Is ph oe nix like to perish in that fireC
-
Death conquer'd Laz'rus was redeem'd by theeB
If I am dead Lord set death's prisoner freeB
Am I more spent or stink I worse than heB
-
If my puff'd life be out give leave to tineE
My shameless snuff at that bright lamp of thineE
Oh what's thy light the less for lighting mineE
-
If I have lost my path great Shepherd sayC
Shall I still wander in a doubtful wayC
Lord shall a lamb of Israel's sheep fold strayC
-
Thou art the pilgrim's path the blind man's eyeA
The dead man's life on thee my hopes relyA
If thou remove I err I grope I dieA
-
Disclose thy sunbeams close thy wings and stayC
See see how I am blind and dead and strayC
O thou that art my light my life my wayC
