With deep affectionA
And recollectionA
I often think ofB
Those Shandon bellsC
Whose sounds so wild wouldD
In the days of childhoodD
Fling around my cradleE
Their magic spellsC
On this I ponderF
Where'er I wanderF
And thus grow fonderF
Sweet Cork of theeG
With thy bells of ShandonA
That sound so grand onA
The pleasant watersH
Of the River LeeG
-
I've heard bells chimingI
Full many a clime inA
Tolling sublime inA
Cathedral shrineA
While at a glib rateJ
Brass tongues would vibrateJ
But all their musicI
Spoke naught like thineA
For memory dwellingI
On each proud swellingI
Of the belfry knellingI
Its bold notes freeG
Made the bells of ShandonA
Sound far more grand onA
The pleasant watersH
Of the River LeeG
-
I've heard bells tollingI
Old Adrian's Mole inA
Their thunder rollingI
From the VaticanA
And cymbals gloriousK
Swinging uproariousK
In the gorgeous turretsK
Of Notre DameL
But thy sounds were sweeterF
Than the dome of PeterF
Flings o'er the TiberF
Pealing solemnlyG
O the bells of ShandonA
Sound far more grand onA
The pleasant watersK
Of the River LeeG
-
There 's a bell in MoscowI
While on tower and kiosk OI
In Saint SophiaM
The Turkman getsK
And loud in airN
Calls men to prayerN
From the tapering summitsK
Of tall minaretsK
Such empty phantomO
I freely grant themP
But there 's an anthemO
More dear to meG
'Tis the bells of ShandonA
That sound so grand onA
The pleasant watersK
Of the River LeeG
