Lettermore Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAAA ACDDAC AEFFAE AGHHAG AIJJAI AHKKAH

These winter days on LettermoreA
The brown west wind it sweeps the bayB
And icy rain beats on the bareA
Unhomely fields that perish thereA
The stony fields of LettermoreA
That drink the white Atlantic sprayA
-
And men who starve on LettermoreA
Cursing the haggard hungry surfC
Will souse the autumn's bruis d grainsD
To light dark fires within their brainsD
And fight with stones on LettermoreA
Or sprawl beside the smoky turfC
-
When spring blows over LettermoreA
To bloom the ragged furze with goldE
The lovely south wind's living breathF
Is laden with the smell of deathF
For fever breeds on LettermoreA
To waste the eyes of young and oldE
-
A black van comes to LettermoreA
The horses stumble on the stonesG
The drivers curse for it is hardH
To cross the hills from OughterardH
And cart the sick from LettermoreA
A stinking load of rags and bonesG
-
But you will go to LettermoreA
When white sea trout are on the runI
When purple glows between the rocksJ
About Lord Dudley's fishing boxJ
Adown the road to LettermoreA
And wide seas tarnish in the sunI
-
And so you'll think of LettermoreA
As a lost island of the blestH
With peasant lovers in a blueK
Dim dusk with heather drench'd in dewK
And the sweet peace of LettermoreA
Remote and dreaming in the WestH
