Invocation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CCCC DEED FFFF DGGD AHHA

Whither O my sweet mistress must I follow theeA
For when I hear thy distant footfall nearingB
And wait on thy appearingB
Lo my lips are silent no words come to meA
-
Once I waylaid thee in green forest coversC
Hoping that spring might free my lips with gentle fingersC
Alas her presence lingersC
No longer than on the plain the shadow of brown kestrel hoversC
-
Through windless ways of the night my spirit followed afterD
Cold and remote were they and there possessedE
By a strange unworldly restE
Awaiting thy still voice heard only starry laughterD
-
The pillared halls of sleep echoed my ghostly treadF
Yet when their secret chambers I essayedF
My spirit sank dismayedF
Waking in fear to find the new born vision fledF
-
Once indeed but then my spirit bloomed in leafy raptureD
I loved and once I looked death in the eyesG
So suddenly made wiseG
Spoke of such beauty as I may never recaptureD
-
Whither O divine mistress must I then follow theeA
Is it only in love say is it only in deathH
That the spirit blossomethH
And words that may match my vision shall come to meA
