She leaned her head upon her handA
And heard the King's decreeB
My lords are feasting in my hallsC
Bid Vashti come to meB
-
I've shown the treasures of my houseD
My costly jewels rareE
But with the glory of her eyesF
No rubies can compareE
-
Adorn'd and crown'd I'd have her comeG
With all her queenly graceH
And 'mid my lords and mighty menI
Unveil her lovely faceH
-
Each gem that sparkles in my crownJ
Or glitters on my throneK
Grows poor and pale when she appearsL
My beautiful my ownK
-
All waiting stood the chamberlainsL
To hear the Queen's replyM
They saw her cheek grow deathly paleN
But light flash'd to her eyeM
-
Go tell the King she proudly saidO
That I am Persia's QueenP
And by his crowds of merry menI
I never will be seenP
-
I'll take the crown from off my headO
And tread it 'neath my feetQ
Before their rude and careless gazeL
My shrinking eyes shall meetQ
-
A queen unveil'd before the crowdR
Upon each lip my nameS
Why Persia's women all would blushT
And weep for Vashti's shameS
-
Go back she cried and waved her handA
And grief was in her eyeM
Go tell the King she sadly saidO
That I would rather dieM
-
They brought her message to the KingU
Dark flash'd his angry eyeM
'Twas as the lightning ere the stormV
Hath swept in fury byM
-
Then bitterly outspoke the KingU
Through purple lips of wrathW
What shall be done to her who daresL
To cross your monarch's pathW
-
Then spake his wily counsellorsL
O King of this fair landA
From distant Ind to EthiopX
All bow to thy commandA
-
But if before thy servants' eyesL
This thing they plainly seeL
That Vashti doth not heed thy willY
Nor yield herself to theeL
-
The women restive 'neath our ruleZ
Would learn to scorn our nameS
And from her deed to us would comeG
Reproach and burning shameS
-
Then gracious King sign with thy handA
This stern but just decreeL
That Vashti lay aside her crownJ
Thy Queen no more to beL
-
She heard again the King's commandA
And left her high estateA2
Strong in her earnest womanhoodB2
She calmly met her fateA2
-
And left the palace of the KingU
Proud of her spotless nameS
A woman who could bend to griefC2
But would not bow to shameS
