Men of Cleveland had a vultureA
Sought a timid dove for preyB
Would you not with human pityC
Drive the gory bird awayB
-
Had you seen a feeble lambkinD
Shrinking from a wolf so boldE
Would ye not to shield the tremblerB
In your arms have made its foldE
-
But when she a hunted sisterB
Stretched her hands that ye might saveF
Colder far than Zembla's regionsG
Was the answer that ye gaveF
-
On the Union's bloody altarB
Was your hapless victim laidH
Mercy truth and justice shudderedI
But your hands would give no aidH
-
And ye sent her back to the tortureB
Robbed of freedom and of frightJ
Thrust the wretched captive strangerB
Back to slavery's gloomy nightJ
-
Back where brutal men may trampleK
On her honor and her fameL
And unto her lips so duskyM
Press the cup of woe and shameL
-
There is blood upon our cityC
Dark and dismal is the stainD
And your hands would fail to cleanse itN
Though Lake Erie ye should drainD
-
There's a curse upon your UnionD
Fearful sounds are in the airB
As if thunderbolts were framingM
Answers to the bondsman's prayerB
-
Ye may offer human victimsO
Like the heathen priests of oldE
And may barter manly honorB
For the Union and for goldE
-
But ye can not stay the whirlwindP
When the storm begins to breakM
And our God doth rise in judgmentQ
For the poor and needy's sakeM
-
And your sin cursed guilty UnionD
Shall be shaken to its baseR
Till ye learn that simple justiceS
Is the right of every raceR
