Twas a night of dreadful horrorA
Death was sweeping through the landB
And the wings of dark destructionC
Were outstretched from strand to strandB
-
Strong men's hearts grew faint with terrorA
As the tempest and the wavesD
Wrecked their homes and swept them downwardE
Suddenly to yawning gravesD
-
'Mid the wastes of ruined householdsF
And the tempest's wild alarmsG
Stood a terror stricken motherA
With a child within her armsG
-
Other children huddled 'round herA
Each one nestling in her heartH
Swift in thought and swift in actionC
She at least from one must partH
-
Then she said unto her daughterA
quot Strive to save one child from death quotH
quot Which one quot said the anxious daughterA
As she stood with bated breathI
-
Oh the anguish of that motherA
What despair was in her eyeJ
All her little ones were preciousK
Which one should she leave to dieJ
-
Then outspake the brother BennieL
quot I will take the little one quotJ
quot No quot exclaimed the anxious motherA
quot No my child it can't be done quotJ
-
quot See my boy the waves are risingM
Save yourself and leave the child quotJ
quot I will trust in Christ quot he answeredJ
Grasped the little one and smiledJ
-
Through the roar of wind and watersN
Ever and anon she criedJ
But throughout the night of terrorA
Never Bennie's voice repliedJ
-
But above the waves' wild surgingM
He had found a safe retreatJ
As if God had sent an angelO
Just to guide his wandering feetJ
-
When the storm had spent its furyL
And the sea gave up its deadJ
She was mourning for her loved onesP
Lost amid that night of dreadJ
-
While her head was bowed in anguishQ
On her ear there fell a voiceR
Bringing surcease to her sorrowS
Bidding all her heart rejoiceR
-
quot Didn't I tell you true quot said BennieL
And his eyes were full of lightJ
quot When I told you God would help meL
Through the dark and dreadful night quotJ
-
And he placed the little darlingM
Safe within his mother's armsG
Feeling Christ had been his guardianC
'Mid the dangers and alarmsG
-
Oh for faith so firm and preciousK
In the darkest saddest nightJ
Till life's gloom encircled shadowsT
Fade in everlasting lightJ
-
And upon the mount of visionC
We our loved and lost shall greetJ
With earth's wildest storms behind usK
And its cares beneath our feetJ
