The Dying Bondman Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHAH CDID DJJJ KLAL DJJJ CMKM ANON

Life was trembling faintly tremblingA
On the bondman's latest breathB
And he felt the chilling pressureC
Of the cold hard hand of DeathB
-
He had been an Afric chieftainD
Worn his manhood as a crownE
But upon the field of battleF
Had been fiercely stricken downE
-
He had longed to gain his freedomG
Waited watched and hoped in vainH
Till his life was slowly ebbingA
Almost broken was his chainH
-
By his bedside stood the masterC
Gazing on the dying oneD
Knowing by the dull grey shadowsI
That life's sands were almost runD
-
Master said the dying bondmanD
Home and friends I soon shall seeJ
But before I reach my countryJ
Master write that I am freeJ
-
For the spirits of my fathersK
Would shrink back from me in prideL
If I told them at our greetingA
I a slave had lived and diedL
-
Give to me the precious tokenD
That my kindred dead may seeJ
Master write it write it quicklyJ
Master write that I am freeJ
-
At his earnest plea the masterC
Wrote for him the glad releaseM
O'er his wan and wasted featuresK
Flitted one sweet smile of peaceM
-
Eagerly he grasped the writingA
I am free at last he saidN
Backward fell upon the pillowO
He was free among the deadN
