They heard the South wind sighingA
A murmur of the rainB
And they knew that Earth was longingA
To see them all againC
-
While the snow drops still were sleepingA
Beneath the silent sodD
They felt their new life pulsingA
Within the dark cold clodD
-
Not a daffodil nor daisyE
Had dared to raise its headD
Not a fairhaired dandelionF
Peeped timid from its bedD
-
Though a tremor of the winterG
Did shivering through them runF
Yet they lifted up their foreheadsH
To greet the vernal sunF
-
And the sunbeams gave them welcomeI
As did the morning airJ
And scattered o'er their simple robesK
Rich tints of beauty rareJ
-
Soon a host of lovely flowersL
From vales and woodland burstD
But in all that fair processionF
The crocuses were firstD
-
First to weave for Earth a chapletD
To crown her dear old headD
And to beautify the pathwayM
Where winter still did treadD
-
And their loved and white haired motherG
Smiled sweetly 'neath the touchN
When she knew her faithful childrenF
Were loving her so muchN
