Onward to her destinationA
O'er the stream that Hannah spedB
When a cry of consternationA
Smote and chilled our hearts with dreadB
-
Wildly leaping madly sweepingC
All relentless in their swayD
Like a band of cruel demonsE
Flames were closing 'round our wayD
-
Oh the horror of those momentsF
Flames above and waves belowG
Oh the agony of agesH
Crowded in one hour of woeG
-
Fainter grew our hearts with anguishI
In that hour with peril rifeJ
When we saw the pilot flyingC
Terror stricken for his lifeJ
-
Then a man up rose before usK
We had once despised his raceL
But we saw a lofty purposeK
Lighting up his darkened faceL
-
While the flames were madly roaringC
With a courage grand and highM
Forth he rushed unto our rescueN
Strong to suffer brave to dieM
-
Helplessly the boat was driftingC
Death was staring in each faceL
When he grasped the fallen rudderO
Took the pilot's vacant placeL
-
Could he save us Would he save usK
All his hope of life give o'erO
Could he hold that fated vesselP
'Till she reached the nearer shoreQ
-
All our hopes and fears were centeredR
'Round his strong unfaltering handS
If he failed us we must perishI
Perish just in sight of landS
-
Breathlessly we watched and waitedT
While the flames were raging fastU
When our anguish changed to raptureO
We were saved yes saved at lastU
-
Never strains of sweetest musicV
Brought to us more welcome soundW
