It is nothing to me the beauty saidA
With a careless toss of her pretty headA
The man is weak if he can't refrainB
From the cup you say is fraught with painB
It was something to her in after yearsC
When her eyes were drenched with burning tearsD
And she watched in lonely grief and dreadA
And startled to hear a staggering treadA
-
It is nothing to me the mother saidA
I have no fear that my boy will treadA
In the downward path of sin and shameE
And crush my heart and darken his nameE
It was something to her when that only sonF
From the path of right was early wonF
And madly cast in the flowing bowlG
A ruined body and sin wrecked soulG
-
It is nothing to me the young man criedH
In his eye was a flash of scorn and prideH
I heed not the dreadful things ye tellI
I can rule myself I know full wellI
It was something to him when in prison he layJ
The victim of drink life ebbing awayJ
And thought of his wretched child and wifeK
And the mournful wreck of his wasted lifeK
-
It is nothing to me the merchant saidA
As over his ledger he bent his headA
I'm busy to day with tare and tretA
And I have no time to fume and fretA
It was something to him when over the wireL
A message came from a funeral pyreL
A drunken conductor had wrecked a trainB
And his wife and child were among the slainB
-
It is nothing to me the voter saidA
The party's loss is my greatest dreadA
Then gave his vote for the liquor tradeA
Though hearts were crushed and drunkards madeA
It was something to him in after lifeK
When his daughter became a drunkard's wifeK
And her hungry children cried for breadA
And trembled to hear their father's treadA
-
Is it nothing for us to idly sleepM
While the cohorts of death their vigils keepM
To gather the young and thoughtless inN
And grind in our midst a grist of sinN
-
It is something yes all for us to standA
Clasping by faith our Saviour's handA
To learn to labor live and fightA
On the side of God and changeless lightA
