Methinks I hear those tuneful chimesA
Borne on the breath of mornB
Proclaiming to the silent worldC
Another Sabbath bornB
With solemn sound they echo throughD
The stilly summer airE
Winning the heart of wayward manF
Unto the house of prayerE
-
New England's sweet church going bellsG
Their memory's very dearH
And oft in dreams we seem to hearI
Them ringing loud and clearH
Again we see the village spireJ
Pointing toward the skiesK
And hear our reverend pastor tellL
Of life that never diesK
-
We see him moving down the aisleM
In light subdued and dimN
The while the organ's swelling notesO
Chant forth the grateful hymnN
The forms of those our childhood knewD
By meadow grove and hillP
Are gathering round with kindly looksQ
As if they loved us stillP
-
In careless hours of gladsome youthR
'Twas our thrice blessed lotS
To dwell upon New England's shoresT
Where God is not forgotS
Where temples to his name are raisedU
And where on bended kneeV
The Christian sends to heavenly courtsW
The worship of the freeV
-
New England's Sabbath chimes we loveX
Upon those words to dwellL
They fall upon our spirits withY
A sweetly soothing spellL
Bringing to mind those brighter daysZ
When hope beamed on our wayA2
And life seemed to our souls but oneB2
Pure and unclouded dayA2
-
New England's Sabbath bells when lastC2
We heard their merry chimeD2
The air was rife with pleasant soundsE2
For 'twas the glad spring timeD2
The robin to those tuneful pealsE2
Poured forth a thrilling strainF2
O 'tis our dearest hope to hearI
Those Sabbath bells againG2
-
For now we're many a weary mileM
From that New England homeH2
In lands where laughing summer liesE2
Our wandering footsteps roamH2
But yet those sweetly chiming bellsE2
Those heavenward pointing spiresE2
Awaken e'er the brightest glowI2
From memory's vestal firesE2
