I had a dream a varied dreamA
Before my ravished sightB
The city of my Lord aroseC
With all its love and lightB
-
The music of a myriad harpsD
Flowed out with sweet accordE
And saints were casting down their crownsF
In homage to our LordE
-
My heart leaped up with untold joyG
Life's toil and pain were o'erH
My weary feet at last had foundI
The bright and restful shoreJ
-
Just as I reached the gates of lightB
Ready to enter inK
From earth arose a fearful cryL
Of sorrow and of sinK
-
I turned and saw behind me surgeM
A wild and stormy seaN
And drowning men were reaching outO
Imploring hands to meN
-
And ev'ry lip was blanched with dreadP
And moaning for reliefQ
The music of the golden harpsD
Grew fainter for their griefQ
-
Let me return I quickly saidP
Close to the pearly gateR
My work is with these wretched onesS
So wrecked and desolateT
-
An angel smiled and gently saidP
This is the gate of lifeU
Wilt thou return to earth's sad scenesV
Its weariness and strifeU
-
To comfort hearts that sigh and breakW
To dry the falling tearX
Wilt thou forego the music sweetY
Entrancing now thy earZ
-
I must return I firmly saidP
The strugglers in that seaN
Shall not reach out beseeching handsA2
In vain for help to meN
-
I turned to go but as I turnedB2
The gloomy sea grew brightB
And from my heart there seemed to flowC2
Ten thousand cords of lightB
-
And sin wrecked men with eager handsA2
Did grasp each golden cordE
And with my heart I drew them onD2
To see my gracious LordE
-
Again I stood beside the gateR
My heart was glad and freeN
For with me stood a rescued throngE2
The Lord had given meN
