Do not cheer for men are dyingA
From their distant homes in painB
And the restless sea is darkenedC
By a flood of crimson rainB
-
Do not cheer for anxious mothersD
Wait and watch in lonely dreadE
Vainly waiting for the footstepsF
Never more their paths to treadE
-
Do not cheer while little childrenG
Gather round the widowed wifeH
Wondering why an unknown peopleI
Sought their own dear father's lifeH
-
Do not cheer for aged fathersD
Bend above their staves and weepJ
While the ocean sings the requiemK
Where their fallen children sleepJ
-
Do not cheer for lips are palingA
On which lay the mother's kissL
'Mid the dreadful roar of battleI
How that mother's hand they missL
-
-
Do not cheer once joyous maidensM
Who the mazy dance did treadE
Bow their heads in bitter anguishN
Mourning o'er their cherished deadE
-
Do not cheer while maid and matronG
In this strife must bear a partO
While the blow that strikes a soldierP
Reaches to some woman's heartO
-
Do not cheer till arbitrationG
O'er the nations holds its swayQ
And the century now closingA
Ushers in a brighter dayQ
-
Do not cheer until the nationG
Shall more wise and thoughtful growR
Than to staunch a stream of sorrowR
By an avalanche of woeR
-
Do not cheer until each nationG
Sheathes the sword and blunts the spearS
And we sing aloud for gladnessM
Lo the reign of Christ is hereT
-
And the banners of destructionG
From the battlefield are furledQ
And the peace of God descendingA
Rests upon a restless worldQ
