'Twas a fearful night the tempest ravedA
With loud and wrathful prideB
The storm king harnessed his lightning steedsC
And rode on the raging tideB
-
The sea king lay on his bed of deathD
Pale mourners around him bentE
They knew the wild and fitful lifeF
Of their chief was almost spentE
-
His ear was growing dull in deathD
When the angry storm he heardG
The sluggish blood in the old man's veinsH
With sudden vigor stirredG
-
I hear them call cried the dying manI
His eyes grew full of lightJ
Now bring me here my warrior robesK
My sword and armor brightJ
-
In the tempest's lull I heard a voiceL
I knew 'twas Odin's callM
The Valkyrs are gathering round my bedN
To lead me unto his hallM
-
Bear me unto my noblest shipO
Light up a funeral pyreP
I'll walk to the palace of the bravesQ
Through a path of flame and fireP
-
Oh wild and bright was the stormy lightJ
That flashed from the old man's eyeR
As they bore him from the couch of deathD
To his battle ship to dieR
-
And lit with many a mournful torchS
The sea king's dying bedN
And like a banner fair and brightJ
The flames around him spreadN
-
But they heard no cry of anguishT
Break through that fiery wallM
With rigid brow and silent lipsU
He was seeking Odin's hallM
-
Through a path of fearful splendorP
While strong men held their breathD
The brave old man went boldly forthV
And calmly talked with deathD
