A SONGB
-
Come to me when I'm dyingC
Gaze on my wasted formD
Tired with so long defyingC
Life's ever rushing stormD
Come come when I am dyingC
And stand beside my bedE
Ere yet my soul is flyingC
And I am cold and deadE
-
Bend low and lower o'er meF
For I've a word to sayG
Though death is just before meF
Ere I can go awayG
Now that my soul is hoveringC
Upon the verge of dayG
For thee I'll lift the coveringC
That veils its quivering rayG
-
O ne'er had I thus spokenH
In health's bright rosy glowI
But death my pride hath brokenH
And brought my spirit lowI
Though now this last revealingC
Quickens life's curdling springsJ
And a half timid feelingC
Faint flushes o'er me flingsJ
-
Bend lower yet above meF
For I would have thee knowI
How passing well I love theeF
And joy to tell thee soI
This love so purely wellingC
Up in this heart of mineK
O hath it e'er found dwellingC
Within thy spirit's shrineK
-
I've prayed my God in meeknessI
To give me some controlL
Over this earthly weaknessI
That so enthralled my soulL
And now my soul rejoicesI
While sweetly thrilling strainsI
From low harmonious voicesI
Soothe all my dying painsI
-
They sing of the EternalM
Whose throne is far aboveN
Where zephyrs softly vernalM
Float over bowers of loveN
Of hopes and joys earth blightedO
Blooming 'neath cloudless skiesI
Of hearts and souls unitedP
In love that never diesI
-
'Tis there 'tis there I'll meet theeF
When life's brief day is o'erQ
O with what joy to greet theeF
On that eternal shoreR
Farewell for death is chillingC
My pulses swift and fastS
And yet in God I'm willingC
This hour should be my lastS
-
Sometimes when day declinethF
And all the gorgeous westT
In gold and purple shinethF
Go to my place of restT
And if thy voice in weepingC
Is borne upon the airU
Think not of me as sleepingC
All cold and silent thereU
-
But turn with glances tenderQ
Toward a shining starV
Whose rays with chastened splendorQ
Fall on thee from afarV
And know the blissful dwellingC
Where I am waiting theeF
When Jordan fiercely swellingC
Shall set thy spirit freeF
