The waterfall is calling meA
With its merry gleesome flowB
And the green boughs are beckoning meA
To where the wild flowers growB
-
I may not go I may not goB
To where the sunny waters flowB
To where the wild wood flowers blowB
I must stay hereC
In prison drearC
Oh heavy life wear on wear onD
Would God that thou wert doneE
-
The busy mill wheel round and roundF
Goes turning with its reckless soundF
And o'er the dam the wafers flowB
Into the foaming stream belowB
And deep and dark away they glideG
To meet the broad bright river's tideG
And all the wayH
They murmuring sayH
Oh child why art thou far awayH
Come back into the sun and strayH
Upon our mossy sideG
-
I may not go I may not goB
To where the gold green waters runE
All shining in the summer sunE
And leap from off the dam belowB
Into a whirl of boiling snowB
Laughing and shouting as they goB
I must stay hereC
In prison drearC
Oh heavy life wear on wear onD
Would God that thou wert doneE
-
The soft spring wind goes passing byI
Into the forests wide and coolJ
The clouds go trooping through the skyI
To look down on some glassy poolJ
The sunshine makes the world rejoiceK
And all of them with gentle voiceK
Call me awayH
With them to stayH
The blessed livelong summer's dayH
-
I may not go I may not goB
Where the sweet breathing spring winds blowB
Nor where the silver clouds go byI
Across the holy deep blue skyI
Nor where the sunshine warm and brightL
Comes down like a still shower of lightL
I must stay hereC
In prison drearC
Oh heavy life wear on wear onD
Would God that thou wert doneE
-
Oh that I were a thing with wingsM
A bird that in a May hedge singsM
A lonely heather bell that swingsM
Upon some wild hill sideG
Or even a silly senseless stoneN
With dark green starry moss o'ergrownN
Round which the waters glideG
