WRITTEN FOR HIS MOTHERA
-
Dame du ciel regents terrienneB
Emperiere des infemaux palusC
-
Lady of Heaven and earth and therewithalD
Crowned Empress of the nether clefts of Hell mdashE
-
I thy poor Christian on thy name do callD
Commending me to thee with thee to dwellD
Albeit in nought I be commendableD
-
But all mine undeserving may not marF
Such mercies as thy sovereign mercies areF
Without the which as true words testifyG
No soul can reach thy Heaven so fair and farF
Even in this faith I choose to live and dieG
Unto thy Son say thou that I am HisC
And to me graceless make Him graciousC
Said Mary of Egypt lacked not of that blissC
Nor yet the sorrowful clerk TheopbilusC
Whose bitter sins were set aside even thusC
Though to the Fiend his bounden service wasC
Oh help me lest in vain for me should passC
Sweet Virgin that shalt have no loss therebyG
The blessed Host and sacring of the MassC
Even in this faith I choose to live and dieG
-
A pitiful poor woman shrunk and oldH
I am and nothing learn'd in letter loreI
Within my parish cloister I beholdH
A painted Heaven where harps and lutes adoreI
And eke an Hell whose damned folk seethe full soreI
One bringeth fear the other joy to meJ
That joy great Goddess make thou mine to be mdashE
Thou of whom all must ask it even as IG
And that which faith desires that let it seeJ
For in this faith I choose to live and dieG
-
O excellent Virgin Princess thou didst bearK
King Jesus the most excellent comforterA
Who even of this our weakness craved a shareK
And for our sake stooped to us from on highG
Offering to death His young life sweet and fairK
Such as He is Our Lord I Him declareK
And in this faith I choose to live and dieG
