Arbor Amoris Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCCDCD EBABFCCDCD ABABBGCDCD A CCDCD

I have a tree a graft of LoveA
That in my heart has taken rootB
Sad are the buds and blooms thereofA
And bitter sorrow is its fruitB
Yet since it was a tender shootB
So greatly hath its shadow spreadC
That underneath all joy is deadC
And all my pleasant days are flownD
Nor can I slay it nor insteadC
Plant any tree save this aloneD
-
Ah yet for long and long enoughE
My tears were rain about its rootB
And though the fruit be harsh thereofA
I scarcely looked for better fruitB
Than this that carefully I putF
In garner for the bitter breadC
Whereon my weary life is fedC
Ah better were the soil unsownD
That bears such growths but Love insteadC
Will plant no tree but this aloneD
-
Ah would that this new spring whereofA
The leaves and flowers flush into shootB
I might have succour and aid of LoveA
To prune these branches at the rootB
That long have borne such bitter fruitB
And graft a new bough comfortedG
With happy blossoms white and redC
So pleasure should for pain atoneD
Nor Love slay this tree nor insteadC
Plant any tree but this aloneD
-
-
L'ENVOYA
-
Princess by whom my hope is fedC
My heart thee prays in lowliheadC
To prune the ill boughs overgrownD
Nor slay Love's tree nor plant insteadC
Another tree save this aloneD
