Within My House Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFFGHGIIFHF AAJJFFFFGGKK| First there's the entrance narrow and so small | A |
| The hat stand seems to fill the tiny hall | A |
| That staircase too has such an awkward bend | B |
| The carpet rucks and rises up on end | B |
| Then all the rooms are cramped and close together | C |
| And there's a musty smell in rainy weather | C |
| Yes and it makes the daily work go hard | D |
| To have the only tap across a yard | D |
| These creaking doors these draughts this battered paint | E |
| Would try I think the temper of a saint | E |
| - | |
| How often had I railed against these things | F |
| With envies and with bitter murmurings | F |
| For spacious rooms and sunny garden plots | F |
| Until one day | G |
| Washing the breakfast dishes so I think | H |
| I paused a moment in my work to pray | G |
| And then and there | I |
| All life seemed suddenly made new and fair | I |
| For like the Psalmist's dove among the pots | F |
| Those endless pots that filled the tiny sink | H |
| My spirit found her wings | F |
| - | |
| Lord thus I prayed it matters not at all | A |
| That my poor home is ill arranged and small | A |
| I not the house am straitened Lord 'tis I | J |
| Enlarge my foolish heart that by and by | J |
| I may look up with such a radiant face | F |
| Thou shalt have glory even in this place | F |
| And when I trip or stumble unawares | F |
| In carrying water up these awkward stairs | F |
| Then keep me sweet and teach me day by day | G |
| To tread with patience Thy appointed way | G |
| As for the house Lord let it be my part | K |
| To walk within it with a perfect heart | K |
