The Street Player Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB CC DD CC EC EC FF GG HI JJ KK CC LL

The shopping had been tedious and the rainA
Came pelting down as she turned home againB
-
The motor bus swirled past with rush and whirrC
Nought but its fumes of petrol left for herC
-
The bloaters in her basket and the cheeseD
Malodorously mixed themselves with theseD
-
And all seemed wrong The world was drab and greyC
As the slow minutes wept themselves awayC
-
And then athwart the noises of the streetE
A violin flung out an Irish airC
-
I'll take you home again Kathleen Ah sweetE
How tender sweet those lilting phrases wereC
-
They soothed away the weariness and broughtF
Such peace to one worn woman over wroughtF
-
That she forgot the things which vexed her soG
The too outrageous price of calicoG
-
The shop girl's look of pitying insolenceH
Because she paused to count the dwindling penceI
-
The player stopped But the rapt vision stayedJ
That woman faced life's worries unafraidJ
-
The sugar shortage now had ceased to beK
An insurmountable calamityK
-
Her kingdom was not bacon no nor butterC
But things more costly still too rare to utterC
-
And over chimney pots so bare and tallL
The sun set gloriously after allL
