The splendors of a southern sunA
Caress the glowing skyB
O'er crested waves the colors glanceC
And gleaming softly dieB
A gentle calm from heaven fallsD
And weaves a mystic spellE
A glowing grace that charms the soulF
Whose glory none can tellE
-
Oh warm sweet treasures of a sunA
Of endless fire and loveG
Those dying embers are the flamesH
From heavenly fires aboveG
Unto the water's edge they creepI
And bathe the seas in redJ
Then die like shadows on the deepI
With glory cold and deadJ
-
A ship a lone dark wandererK
Upon the southern seasL
Speeds like a white faced messengerK
Before the dying breezeL
Her masts are tipped with amethystM
A splendor all untoldN
A crimson mantle wraps her roundO
Her sails are made of goldN
-
The light wind dies she slowly driftsP
Then stops an idle thingQ
While sunset clouds around her prowR
A dreamy grandeur flingQ
And eyes upon her deck look forthS
With looks of longing painT
A hundred sunsets they would giveU
Dear home to see againV
-
But see a shadow as of nightW
Spreads o'er the crimson skyB
Like doomed and lifeless forms of earthX
The clouds in heaven lieB
A silence falls the ship stands stillY
A fated thing of earthX
Then like a child of sin and wrongZ
The storm is given birthX
-
Oh struggle well ye gallant crewA2
With storm and wind and waveB2
For there are helpless women hereC2
And children too to saveB2
Quick sailors do your duty wellE
And man the life boats tooA2
For soon the rocks will strand the shipD2
And pierce her through and throughA2
-
See like a woman turned to stoneE2
A weeping mother standsF2
Her heart seems like seems like some frozen thingQ
She wrings her trembling handsF2
Within her arms she holds a childG2
With frightened wond'ring eyesH2
Below the waters pitilessI2
Above the angry skiesH2
-
Beside her stands a fair young girlJ2
With eyes that flash and quiverK
They are the only ones still leftK2
These three that moan and shiverK
But soon a voice shouts back the wordsL2
Through all the deaf'ning roarM2
A strong hand grasps the trembling girlJ2
There's room for just one moreM2
-
Stay stay she cries with whitened faceN2
Why should I fear to dieB
Oh take this woman by my sideO2
Nor stay to question whyB
She has a dear one 'mongst your crewA2
She is a mother tooA2
I am alone I fear not deathP2
If this you'll only doA2
-
The sailor grasped the mother's handQ2
She turned and kissed the maidR2
The tears of pity filled her eyesH2
Yet not one word she saidJ
The maiden stood with outstretched handsF2
All hope indeed was goneS2
And yet she stood with fearless heartT2
Undaunted and aloneE2
-
Oh God the heart that knows your loveG
Will never need to fearU2
A priceless gem lies on my faceN2
The mother's grateful tearV2
The lightnings swept across the shipD2
The darkness wrapped her roundO
Above the thunder of the stormW2
There came no other soundO
-
The morning broke the storm had fledJ
The wreck was washed awayX2
And calmly now as yesterdayX2
The sea in splendor layX2
The noble heart that throbbed with lifeY2
Lay fathoms deep belowZ2
And what lies buried in that heartT2
The waves alone can knowZ2
