A beautiful form and a beautiful faceA
A winsome bride and a woman's graceA
So fair and sweet it were heaven indeedB
For man to follow where she would leadC
-
A web of lace and a jeweled handD
And life is changed by a golden bandD
A dream of love and a wealth of goldE
The old new story once more is toldE
-
A wealth of flowers and a robe of snowF
A beauteous woman with cheeks aglowF
A train of satin that sweeps the floorG
And life is altered forevermoreG
-
A beautiful scene on this Christmas eveH
Where all could linger and none could grieveH
A dazzling vision of wealth and prideI
A royal feast and a happy brideI
-
But turn your steps to the lonely streetJ
Where fierce winds mutter and wild storms beatJ
And come with me to the haunts of woeF
Where life is a burden and hopes are lowF
-
Look on this woman so thin and whiteK
You close your eyes 'tis a dreadful sightK
But shudder not she is cold and deadC
And died oh men for a CRUST OF BREADC
-
So young and hopeless oh God aboveL
With none to comfort and none to loveL
A tortured soul and a hungry cryG
That rang unheard through the stormy skyG
-
While oh so near in the gloomy nightK
Lay rescue and love and warmth and lightK
And oh so near to the longing eyesM
There gleamed the bright depths of a paradiseN
-
Oh look on this picture thou fair young brideI
For one poor morsel of bread she diedI
One glittering gem from your breast or hairG
Could have saved this woman who lieth thereG
-
One costly spray of your flowers brightK
Could have bought the food that she craved this nightK
One drop of love from your boundless storeG
Her soul could have saved forevermoreG
-
Oh sadd'ning picture this Christmas eveH
For thy sad story the angels grieveH
To think in this city of wealth and mightK
A woman perished for BREAD this nightK
