Oh tell me not of the lands so oldA
Where the Orient treasures its hills of goldA
And the rivers lie in the sun's bright raysB
Forever singing the old world's praiseB
Nor proudly boast of the gardens grandC
That spring to earth at a king's commandC
There are treasures here in the far great WestD
That rival the hills on the Orient's crestD
-
Far from the sight of the dusty townE
Like a perfect gem in a golden crownE
Lies a beautiful garden vast and fairF
Where the wild birds sing in the evening airF
And the dews fall down in a silent showerG
On the fragrant head of each beaming flowerG
While far and near o'er the land sun kissedH
Hangs the roseate veil of the sunset mistH
-
Under the shade of the western wallI
There's a glimmer of roses fair and tallI
And the crimson heart of each royal flowerG
Gleams purely forth from its leafy bowerG
There are things in this world too sweet to lastJ
But we catch their grace ere the bloom is pastJ
And the roses that die in the early mornK
In the garden of memory anew are bornK
-
The dear little pansies quaint and fairF
Uplift their heads in the silent airF
And the gleam of the purple tinged with goldA
Is as fair as the roses' velvety foldA
There are tropical plants from the Southern seasL
Where the flowers sleep in the perfumed breezeL
And the scent of the orange groves fill the airF
With a mystical incense rich and rareF
-
Like waxen buds in a leafy screenM
Magnolia blooms float in a sea of greenM
And their fragrance falls on the dewy airF
Like the breath of the tropics richly rareF
And up from the South in the voiceless nightN
Steals the scent of the blossoms pure and whiteN
And one by one as the winds sweep byO
They shrink away from that touch to dieO
-
There are trees and flowers from every climeP
Defying the scope of the poet's rhymeP
There are beautiful lawns where the feet could restD
Unwilling to wander forever blestD
There are peaceful nooks where the soul might dwellQ
Forever lost in a fadeless spellQ
But the tomb of the man who is great and wiseR
Is the loveliest spot in this paradiseS
-
And just to the south is a park so fairF
That the children of God love to wander thereF
And the emerald green of its winding waysB
Is flecked with the gold of the sun's last raysB
There are statues too of the good and greatT
Who point on forever to Truth's wide gateT
And the bronze and the green and the sun's red goldA
Are mingled at eve in a glory untoldA
-
Immortal the name of the man shall beU
Who hath given these treasures so fair to seeU
And the grace of the flowers he loves so wellQ
The truth of his goodness forever shall tellQ
But fairer than all are the deeds of loveV
That shine in God's temple of grace aboveV
And Fame on her beautiful shadowless heightN
Has woven his name in a glory of lightN
