To the memory of Lieut Wm W Wardell of the First Massachusetts Cavalry killed MayA
-
-
Above his head the cypress wavesB
Its dark green drooping leavesC
The sunlight through its branches wideD
Where bright birds linger side by sideD
A golden net work weavesC
-
Within the church yard's silent gloomE
He lies in quiet restF
And never more to cold pale browG
Or proud lips mute with silence nowG
Will loving lips be pressedF
-
Perhaps even now in death's dark dreamH
He sees the deadly strifeI
Where brothers fought with blinded eyesJ
Forgetting all the tender tiesJ
That bound them life to lifeI
-
Ah nobly there he proudly rodeK
With honest warm true heartL
And shrank not from the carnage redM
But bravely thee among the deadM
He took a soldier's partL
-
Yet soon his hands fell helplesslyN
Low at his trembling sideD
For on his brow the death drops roseO
While in his heart the life blood frozeO
And died his young life's prideD
-
The dark brown eyes whose loving glanceP
Gave happiness to allQ
Have closed their weary lids for ayeR
Beneath the sunset of life's dayA
Where dark'ning shadows fallQ
-
Oh weary years that still creep onS
Adown the sands of TimeT
Give back the loving tones of yoreU
That haunt us here forever moreU
As echoing church bell's chimeT
-
And yet it cannot cannot beN
That hearts must ever grieveV
Above his head the shadows fallQ
Yet still the sunbeams shine through allQ
And mystic splendors weaveV
-
And thus upon the grieving heartL
That ever weeps for himW
The dark clouds fall yet God's sweet lightX
Of faith still onward takes its flightX
Through shadows vast and grimW
-
Oh faint heart with thy clinging griefY
Look upward to the skyR
For there beyond the weary strifeI
Where angels ever guard thy lifeI
There's One who hears thy cryR
-
Within the City of the DeadM
He only lies asleepZ
And soon his hand will clasp once moreU
Thine own as oft he did of yourU
With love's pure feeling deepZ
