Above his head the cypress waves	B
Its dark green drooping leaves	C
The sunlight through its branches wide	D
Where bright birds linger side by side	D
A golden net work weaves	C

Within the church yard's silent gloom	E
He lies in quiet rest	F
And never more to cold pale brow	G
Or proud lips mute with silence now	G
Will loving lips be pressed	F

Perhaps even now in death's dark dream	H
He sees the deadly strife	I
Where brothers fought with blinded eyes	J
Forgetting all the tender ties	J
That bound them life to life	I

Ah nobly there he proudly rode	K
With honest warm true heart	L
And shrank not from the carnage red	M
But bravely thee among the dead	M
He took a soldier's part	L

Yet soon his hands fell helplessly	N
Low at his trembling side	D
For on his brow the death drops rose	O
While in his heart the life blood froze	O
And died his young life's pride	D

The dark brown eyes whose loving glance	P
Gave happiness to all	Q
Have closed their weary lids for aye	R
Beneath the sunset of life's day	A
Where dark'ning shadows fall	Q

Oh weary years that still creep on	S
Adown the sands of Time	T
Give back the loving tones of yore	U
That haunt us here forever more	U
As echoing church bell's chime	T

And yet it cannot cannot be	N
That hearts must ever grieve	V
Above his head the shadows fall	Q
Yet still the sunbeams shine through all	Q
And mystic splendors weave	V

And thus upon the grieving heart	L
That ever weeps for him	W
The dark clouds fall yet God's sweet light	X
Of faith still onward takes its flight	X
Through shadows vast and grim	W

Oh faint heart with thy clinging grief	Y
Look upward to the sky	R
For there beyond the weary strife	I
Where angels ever guard thy life	I
There's One who hears thy cry	R

Within the City of the Dead	M
He only lies asleep	Z
And soon his hand will clasp once more	U
Thine own as oft he did of your	U
With love's pure feeling deep	Z
