The Old Year And The New Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDDAD EFGFHIJK AIGILMNM OIOIPIQI IBEBCIRI

Low at my feet there lies to nightA
A crushed and withered roseB
Within its heart of fading redC
No crimson fire glowsB
For o'er its leaves the frost of deathD
Steals like an icy breathD
And soon 't will vanish from my sightA
A thing of gloom and deathD
-
Ah beauteous flower once thou wertE
My pleasure and my prideF
And now when thou art old and wornG
I will not turn asideF
But gently o'er thy faded leavesH
I'll shed one kindly tearI
That thou wilt know though dead and goneJ
To memory thou art dearK
-
Before my gaze there lies to nightA
A rose bud fresh and fairI
And like the breath of dewy mornG
Its fragrance scents the airI
This fragile flower I fain would pluckL
With hand most kind yet boldM
And watch its petals day by dayN
Their shining wealth unfoldM
-
And soon 'twill be my very ownO
To keep forevermoreI
This flower that bloomed for me aloneO
Upon a heavenly shoreI
God grant my hands may guard it wellP
And keep it pure and fairI
For angel hands have gathered itQ
And placed it in my careI
-
Then fare thee well thou dying yearI
Thou art my withered roseB
And on the stem where once thou wertE
Another flower growsB
Yet fear thee not when thou are deadC
To thee I'll still be trueI
And 'mid the joys of other yearsR
I still will think of youI
