A limpid lake a diamond gemA
The moonbeams kissed with lightB
And all the stars that heaven knewC
Were mirrored in the nightB
-
How fair the world how fair the nightB
When lake and river runD
Like jeweled streams of fairy landE
Beneath a silver sunD
-
The lake grew proud and claimed each starF
That lay upon her breastG
Ah they are mine she said these gemsH
That in my bosom restG
-
And yonder moon that sails on highI
Doth shine for me aloneJ
Beneath the foam that crests my wavesK
Is built her silver throneJ
-
A star king knelt and kissed the wavesK
That swept the shadowed shoreL
Our moon is queen of heaven he saidM
Is queen forevermoreL
-
A thousand lakes are hers by nightB
A thousand lakes of lightB
A thousand rivers kiss her feetN
A thousand rivers brightB
-
Then be not vain thou lakelet smallO
The moon is not for theeP
Her home is in the river wideQ
Her throne is in the seaP
-
The bright waves swept the silent shoreL
The star king crept awayR
Yet calm and fair still unconvincedS
The lake in silence layR
-
The moon that swept her silvery lightB
Far o'er the waters wideQ
Belonged to her and all the starsT
That floated side by sideQ
-
Ah silver lake too well we knowU
How like we are to theeP
A thousand truths are in the worldV
That we may never seeP
