O beautiful hills in the purple lightA
That shadow the western skyB
I dream of you oft in the silent nightA
As the golden days go byB
-
The river that flows at my longing feetC
Is tinged with a deeper glowD
But the song that it sings is as sad to dayE
As it was in the long agoD
-
The far off clouds in the far off skyB
Are tinted with gold and redF
But the lesson they tell to the hearts of menG
Is a lesson that never is saidF
-
The star crowned night in her sable plumesH
Is veiling the eastern skyB
And she trails her robes in the dying firesI
That far in the west do lieB
-
A single gem from her circlet oldJ
Is lost as she wanders byB
And the beautiful star with its golden lightA
Shines out in the lonely skyB
-
O beautiful star in the misty skyB
My soul would take wings with teeK
But you sail away in your golden seasL
With never a thought for meK
-
O sun crowned hills in the purple lightA
I could sit at your feet foreverM
But you fade away in the shadowy nightA
And I'll see you again ah neverM
-
Dark river that flows at my longing feetC
I list to your music lowD
But the song that you sing brings me thoughts to nightA
Of the beautiful long agoD
-
And my soul grows sad as I think of the dayE
That radiant day of lightA
When the sun went down in a glory of goldJ
'Neath the pitiless shadows of nightA
-
Farewell ye hills in the purple lightA
Farewell to your glory foreverM
You fade away in the silent nightA
And I'll see you again ah neverM
