Come pensive nun devout and pureA
Sober steadfast and demureA
-
MiltonB
-
-
White robed nun I pray thee tell meC
Whatsoe'er my life shall beC
Thou of God art purely chosenB
Ne'er can I be like to theeC
-
There is sunlight in the shadowD
Of the lives we live belowD
There is starlight in the darknessE
Of the night of human woeD
-
Yet I pray thee sweet voiced womanB
Tell me of thy life and theeC
Can the soul to heaven givenB
Yield its secrets unto meC
-
Nevermore the earth shall claim theeC
Only lilies bloom for theeC
All the world is full of beautyC
That thy eyes may never seeC
-
On the hill the daisies springingF
Lift their heads to greet the mornG
Yet thou mayest not pluck the smallestH
Of these blossoms lately bornG
-
Violets may bring no memoriesI
Unto thee of days gone byJ
Summer eves and joyous morningsK
In the grave these too must dieJ
-
Long ago the roses droopingF
Crimson blushed and died for theeC
Yet to day no more thou know'st themL
They are lost in Life's dead seaC
-
Oh the world is full of beautyC
Oh the world is full of loveM
Yet the chains that bind thee earthwardC
Link thy soul with Heaven aboveM
-
Through the windows creeps the sunlightC
Rays of gold and restless redC
Covering all the world with gloryC
Sweetly resting on thy headC
-
Would my life were crowned with sunlightC
Would my soul was pure as thineN
Then the world no more would know meC
Earth were Heaven and Heaven were mineN
